Notes:
What to say other than
FINALLY. This set was released 12 years after the last
Update set, that set was for Playmates in 1994 to
1996. (Serious collectors wil recall there was also a
group of 1997 cards released with Playmate Review in 2004, in a failed
attempt to marry the newsstand editions to the Centerfold cards,
Those cards are basically repeated in this edition with a slightly
different format). The biggest change in the basic set is the
absence of cover cards, each Playmate now has only a pictorial and a
centerfold card. This was done mainly because current contracts
with any celebrity appearing on the cover of Playboy are for single use
of the image, so Stellar would have had to go back to each celebrity
and negotiate for re-release of the image, which would be cost
prohibitive. The good news is that the format of the cards looks
very similar to cards from older editions, the white border on the side
of the centerfold card and the backs look much like the original series
cards.
Another change is the way the cards are distributed,
there are no foil packs. The cards are being shipped in boxes of
96 cards, dealers and collectors must break down the boxes to assemble
sets, and obtain chase cards. The cost of packaging and opening
individual foil packs no longer exists, and most of the foil wrappers
got thrown out anyway. This is a reflection of what all
card sets are heading towards, and the fact that foil packs are do not
make much sense for a adult card set, since adult buyers do not usually
purchase only one or two foil packs at a time.
Card quality meets the high standard we have come to
expect from Playboy and Stellar. Coallation in boxes is also excellent,
one base set to a box is standard. Chase card insertion
varies, some boxes are better than others, but this is expected.
Lower insertion
ratio (that is rarer) chase cards have the usual purple foil, gold
foil, and silver (or platinum if you will) variations for those who
think it matters. There is a stickered case topper, which
was a "platinum" memorabila card. This likely varies from case to
case.
Spotlight cards
are lower insertion than the other memorabilia cards. The
artwork for the spotlight cards is similar to older releases, and there
are only three Playmates involved with, kiss, autograph, swatch and DNA
for all three. No idea of the number of chase cards made, but the
insertion ratio should give some idea.
Kiss cards are a
recent development for Playboy cards and are new to centerfold cards in
this release. The concept is not new however, Playmates have been
selling personal kiss cards through dealers, Benchwarmers had several
editions with Kiss cards, and other adult sets have contained them,
Scream Queens for example back in the 1990s. Scream Queens also
did nipple print cards, will that be next? Inquiring minds want
to know. .
